Too much advertising kills the advertising, this is how I would have defined Fenty Beauty before stopping by the counter at my hometown’s little Sephora. I was surrounded by teenagers, but swatching away, I couldn’t help but acknowledging how good the products were. They are, however, much more daring that what I usually pick and more importantly, apply on my skin. I’ve hesitated, and finally grabbed the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo in the shades Lightning Dust -left side- and Fire Crystal -right side-, not quite sure if I would wear it more than just once.

A few days later, I’m much more confident about my choice. Despite a formula which is intense and bold, the shade duo is very muted down and discrete, the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo is essentially the safest way to get out of my comfort zone when it comes to highlighters, shimmers and … glitters. Yes, the right side of the compact, known as Fire Crystal, has glitters in it, it isn’t visible under certain lights, but it could appear at any time, transforming the Killawatt Duo into the most daring highlighter I own. Yet sparingly used as a topper for Lightning Dust -left side-, a subtle, everyday beige highlighter which I like to use on its own as well, it never looks too harsh or over the top. It does, however, emphasize skin texture, making the application trickier than usual: with Fire Crystal, it is all about the balance between too precise and not precise enough, that is to say between the harsh stripe and the highlighter which becomes a blusher and a bronzer at the same time. In other words, the Killawatt Duo cannot go too far away in the middle of the face -more prone to skin texture and enlarged pores-, but need to be well blended. Thankfully, it belongs to the trendy creamy powders, so blending it doesn’t require too much effort on my behalf. Although the luminosity is intense, the shades themselves aren’t too pigmented -my favourite when it comes to cheek makeup-, the luminosity is the main feature, the shades, very sheer and neutral, just add a little bit more dimension to the face. Lightning dust is a simple, light beige, Fire Crystal is its bolder brother, adding some peachy tones to the mix!

Just as the white, irisdescent compact presages it, Fenty Beauty takes beauty very seriously without forgetting that makeup has to be fun and unusual these days. Adding a mix of high intensity and flattering colours to the cheeks, it made me venture into the world of shimmery highlighters -gorgeous as eyeshadows as well-, without me feeling too out there.

  • I think this is the one I’m most leaning towards picking up! Looks beautiful!

  • It looks like a highlighter for the not-so-highlighty among us. But I want primer, setting powder and foundation.

Linda, Libra, Loca: Beauty, Baby and Backpacking

    • Yes, I would say a daring highlighter for someone who isn’t used to wear them! The foundation was probably the only item I wasn’t too convinced by, it just looks a little bit cakey and a little bit drying on the skin (even though I know your skin isn’t dry)! But I’m very tempted to purchase the primer as well!

  • I really want the highlighters and some of the sticks! I just have to wait until November when my no-makeup ban will end!

    • Love how patient you are! Yes, the sticks are really tempting me as well, I swatched them on my hands and they stayed on them for ages!

  • I definitely don’t shy away from highlighters and am admiring this, The packaging is very chic and sleek too x

    • Yes, the packagings are all very chic (something which I always highly appreciate)! If you like your highlighters, then you should definitely check them out!

  • I’m really impressed with the foundation and highlighter! These shades sound lovely. I must get this, although i already have one haha xx

    • Glad to hear you love the foundation, it seemed a tad too dry for my skin when I swatched it, but I might try it if I hear great things about it! Yes, it was very hard to only pick up one highlighter!

  • I’m testing out the Moon Metal highlighter, which isn’t glittery or super intense for me lol. I want to try this one out. I think a little sparkle is always nice to glitz things up sometimes 🙂

    • Yes, I definitely agree, and the fact that this highlighter is divided into 2 makes it a little bit more wearable for me, just because I don’t have to use Fire Crystal every day, I can reserve it for special occasions!

  • Violette

I heard so many good things about Fenty! I really have to try it!

  • I really want to try fenty beauty products but they are not available in my local stores yet.

    • Oh, that’s a shame! I hope you will have a chance to try the range, though, especially since I’m very impressed by it so far!

  • Maiya Newey

I really want to try some bits from Fenty! x

  • Whilst I am not dying to really try anything from this brand, its been quite difficult to ignore the hype. I love really subtle highlighters but its really cool you get two in one with this product xxx

    • Yes, I know, I felt a little bit guilty writing about it as it’s already been everywhere lately and I know it can be a little bit boring/annoying for the reader sometimes! Yes, that’s what I prefer about this highlighter, it offers more options!

  • Looks so pretty, I need everything from Fenty Beauty!

  • I have never tried anything from this brand before but this looks super pretty xx

  • i would love to try fenty beauty and their highlighter look so good. i love the one you picked as i feel like the famous trophy wife would be too much for me.

    • Yes, I did swatch Trophy Wife and it does look beautiful, but it just isn’t my kind of shade at all, even as an eyeshadow, I’m not quite sure if I would wear it! Thank you for reading 🙂
