DARING YET FLATTERING | FENTY BEAUTY LIGHTNING DUST & FIRE CRYSTAL KILLAWATT
Too much advertising kills the advertising, this is how I would have defined Fenty Beauty before stopping by the counter at my hometown’s little Sephora. I was surrounded by teenagers, but swatching away, I couldn’t help but acknowledging how good the products were. They are, however, much more daring that what I usually pick and more importantly, apply on my skin. I’ve hesitated, and finally grabbed the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo in the shades Lightning Dust -left side- and Fire Crystal -right side-, not quite sure if I would wear it more than just once.
A few days later, I’m much more confident about my choice. Despite a formula which is intense and bold, the shade duo is very muted down and discrete, the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo is essentially the safest way to get out of my comfort zone when it comes to highlighters, shimmers and … glitters. Yes, the right side of the compact, known as Fire Crystal, has glitters in it, it isn’t visible under certain lights, but it could appear at any time, transforming the Killawatt Duo into the most daring highlighter I own. Yet sparingly used as a topper for Lightning Dust -left side-, a subtle, everyday beige highlighter which I like to use on its own as well, it never looks too harsh or over the top. It does, however, emphasize skin texture, making the application trickier than usual: with Fire Crystal, it is all about the balance between too precise and not precise enough, that is to say between the harsh stripe and the highlighter which becomes a blusher and a bronzer at the same time. In other words, the Killawatt Duo cannot go too far away in the middle of the face -more prone to skin texture and enlarged pores-, but need to be well blended. Thankfully, it belongs to the trendy creamy powders, so blending it doesn’t require too much effort on my behalf. Although the luminosity is intense, the shades themselves aren’t too pigmented -my favourite when it comes to cheek makeup-, the luminosity is the main feature, the shades, very sheer and neutral, just add a little bit more dimension to the face. Lightning dust is a simple, light beige, Fire Crystal is its bolder brother, adding some peachy tones to the mix!
Just as the white, irisdescent compact presages it, Fenty Beauty takes beauty very seriously without forgetting that makeup has to be fun and unusual these days. Adding a mix of high intensity and flattering colours to the cheeks, it made me venture into the world of shimmery highlighters -gorgeous as eyeshadows as well-, without me feeling too out there.
