Whilst I would still consider myself to be very French, I like to think I have picked up on many very British and Scottish habits and behaviours since the beginning of my stay. I went through very apologetic to extremely apologetic, and I often surprise myself being very chatty with complete strangers. The list could go on but there is one thing which will not be in it: the complaining or commenting about the weather, it might be my favourite conversation to watch every morning, but there is always a part of me which cannot help but thinking about how pointless it is. The weather isn’t gonna change because of a little bit of complaining, instead, however, we can act and adapt ourselves to it, and the four foundations I will talk about today are all about helping the skin to deal with the winter, not always very friendly, weather.

Harsh, cold and windy, the winter weather always leaves the skin a little bit dryer and a little bit more dehydrated than it naturally is, in fact sometimes so dry and dehydrated than the thought of covering it up with some makeup hurts. On these days, I reach for the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Youth Boosting Perfect Skin Foundation SPF 15 -1 Fair-. Too dewy for my summer skin, it becomes my favourite foundation in the winter: it gently covers up dry patches whilst offering a boost of radiance to the skin.

Reading blogs and comments, I’m often surprised to see that winter goes hand in hand with full coverage and/or thick base for most people. Winter or summer, I always like to think I give my skin a chance to breathe with a lightweight foundation and in this category, the L’Oréal True Match foundation -1.N Ivory- beats records whilst still offering a decent amount of coverage to the skin.

There is nothing worse than putting on a foundation and already wanting to take it off a few hours later. Easily irritable and very picky, the winter skin truly has the capacity to ruin the day sometimes. If I always make sure all my foundations are comfortable to wear, the Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Gel Touch Foundation -n°10- is by far the most comfortable foundation I own. With a thin consistency and a cooling experience, it resembles a skincare product at application. Very easy to forget during the day, it nonetheless never fails to freshen up the skin in the most beautiful, invisible way.

The winter season has a particular penchant for making the days feel longer and somewhat rougher than they should be whilst the makeup is fading away too quickly or too easily for my liking. When a flawless base is required from 8. am to 8. pm -realistically, I will give up or redo my makeup after 12 hours of wear-, I reach for the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation or a satin finish in a medium coverage which, winter or summer, does not move, go darker or fade away throughout the day.

  • Ooh I really love the sound of the Chanel foundation!

You made me laugh with the weather chat – it’s a thing here in Ireland too and, I agree, it’s pointless! xx

    • Ah, ah, it makes me smile because people can have a 10 minute conversation about it, and they sometimes talk about it as if it is a very serious matter, but I like it, it is like a morning ritual 🙂

  • I love that Chanel foundation, I haven’t used it for such a long time, I am going to have to dig it back out!

    • It is lovely, isn’t it? Glad to hear I’m not the only one who thinks so!

  • I really want to try the Charlotte Tilbury and GA foundations. I’ve heard nothing but good things about them!

    • Yes, even though it is for different reasons, they are both pretty famous, and I’m glad to report that they are also both worth the hype!

  • Chatting to strangers isn´t a thing here in Germany, and the weather isn´t really a topic either. We complain much more about the traffic…

As far as bases go I prefer a matte finish and medium coverage all year round, as well as a decent staying power, but comfort is really important. A foundation that I feel like I need to take off is a no go.

    • Traffic is such a huge topic of conversation in France, not quite sure if I like it either to be honest!

  • I actually wear light base all year round but that’s because I can’t stand not seeing my own skin peeking through. Sometimes I don’t even know why I wear foundation because I use extremely little each time. I have Luminous Silk in my list to buy, so many have raved about it.

    • Oh yes, I want to be able to see my own skin as well! I think you’ll love the Luminous Silk Foundation, it is very pigmented but I manage to wear it as a light coverage foundation with a lot of blending, and its finish on the skin is amongst the most beautiful ones I’ve seen so far!

  • Hahaha love your introduction – very apologetic haha! I really enjoy the CT Light Wonder foundation. It just gives me the perfect amount of glow xxx

    • Oh …thank you for such a lovely comment 🙂 Very glad you’ve enjoyed the post!

I must try all these foundations. I’m a foundation junkie but I haven’t been able to enjoy it as much during these Aussie summer months as its hot as hell here. I can’t wait for it too cool down so i can jump on the foundation band wagon once again. x

    • Oh, I know this summer struggle too well, let me know if you end up trying some of these, I always like to have a foundation junkie’s opinion on them 🙂

  • Totally agree that comfortable foundation is essential, especially as it’s the base layer for the all the rest of our makeup!

Oops! I’m probably guilty of talking a lot about the weather… although, never one to complain! I figure it’s best to just embrace whatever the sky throws at us haha 😉

    Gabrielle | A Glass Of Ice x

    • Exactly! We don’t have the power to change the weather, so let’s embrace it! Yes, I think a makeup can never look or feel comfortable if the foundation sits on top of the skin and feels heavy and cakey!
